Dear ZopeMag Readers,

We have lots of good news to report!

ZopeMag's subscriber base

is increasing dramatically -- subscriptions are up by about 30% in comparison to the April - June quarter so that by the time you read this we will have exceeded 250 subscribers and in November will have likely reached 300 -- that means ZopeMag will be breaking even!

What do we do with the money?

  • Pay writers to write about Zope
  • Pay editor(s) to make sure that the writing meets the needs of our readers
  • Pay designers to help make information understandable
  • Publish a dependable quarterly (online) magazine
  • Create a lot of freely available documentation

As a subscriber you might have noticed that on the average our articles are becoming longer. Two prominent examples in the last quarter were "Zope and SOAP" (15 pages) and "Converting the State of Hawaii Governor's Website to Plone" (18 pages).

In every quarter we have released at least one free article (usually two), but last quarter, for the first time we were able to release three different types of free articles to the Zope community. This quarter we will be releasing even more free documentation starting with Sidnei da Silva's "Archetypes: An Introduction".

SuperGuide for Zope Newbies

We have taken a look at the documentation for Newbies and we were a little dismayed. A lot of it is out of date and hardly relevant. It's not our style to complain so within the last two weeks of October we will be releasing the first of three sections of the Superguide and in subsequent issues we will release the other two parts.

The Zope for Newbies SuperGuide is one of several SuperGuides we are working on. Together with our miniGuides they will build the basis for the reference section of ZopeMag.

If you haven't already subscribed: help ZopeMag grow the amount of available Zope and Plone documentation -- by becoming a subscriber today!

PyZine

As you may have heard beehive KG, the publisher of ZopeMag, has taken over the responsibility for publishing PyZine (Py), the much-beloved Python zine. We are working hard behind the scenes to bring out a special relaunch issue of Py sometime in October and in January will be releasing another significantly longer issue which will feature more articles than Py has ever seen.

This will have no effect on ZopeMag other than that soon we will be offering a special joint subscription rate for those interested.

ZopeMag Weekly News

We are funding the development and publication of the ZopeMag Weekly News. The goal of this resource, freely available to the public, is to deliver a weekly summary of important or interesting things that are happening in the Zope/Plone/CMF/Community.

This site is still work in progress as we have a long list of things we'd like to implement -- but we hope you'll keep coming back to watch our progress.

All content published in this resource is released under the Open Content License V 1.0.

If you have been with the Zope community for a while you will know that over the years several attempts have been made to deliver a regular weekly (then monthly) summary of things going on in the community. They have all failed.

This new resource needs your support! Here's what you can do to help:

  • If you have an announcement submit it
  • Support our sponsors: they are helping fund this resource
  • Subscribe to ZopeMag
To our subscribers:

Thank you! We appreciate your business, all the warm responses, the friendly egging on, and constructive criticism ;-) Your feedback is helping us make ZopeMag better.

You likely will have noticed that we have implemented several of your suggestions, including a printer-friendly mode for all recent articles.

One of our subscribers, John Tynan, liked our "Customized UserFolders" article (a two-part article appearing in Issues 1 and 2) because it helped him clearly understand how to store user data in a MySQL database. He suggested we do a follow-up article dealing, for example, with how members might be able to opt in and out of a newsletter. We're pleased to say we will be publishing this article during the current quarter.

If you would like us to cover a particular topic please let us know. We are interested in delivering highly relevant documentation for our subscribers.
